This study is of interest for at least three reasons: as an inquiry into a relatively unstudied area of the Soviet orbit, as an analysis of Communist achievement in an advanced economy, and as providing a comparison in the performance of the East and West German economies. The authors' conclusion is that "the East German economy has performed more poorly than the West German economy by whatever tests one wishes to apply."
