On Thermonuclear War

By Herman Kahn
Princeton University Press, 1960
651 pp. $10.00

This is an exceptionally important book on some of the most critical issues of the next decade. Comprising three "lectures"--in the sense that Goethe's "Faust" can be called a "play"--it is an extended, informed, perceptive and often brilliant exploration of the problems of central war, deterrence, national strategies and objectives. Long associated with the RAND Corporation, Mr. Kahn has succeeded in thinking concretely and imaginatively about a range of questions too frequently avoided in much discussion of the prospects for war and peace.
