The Making of the President, 1960

By Theodore H. White

Atheneum, 1961, 400 pp.

In the fall of 1959 Mr. White, an experienced reporter and novelist, began work for this study. For the next year he obviously lived with the campaign the length and breadth of the country. The result is a quite extraordinarily interesting and illuminating account of the way "the Americans chose their President in 1960"--from the primaries, through the conventions, the grueling travels of the candidates, to Kennedy's narrow victory in November. A first-rate piece of contemporary history writing.
