The First Indochina War: French and American Policy 1945-54

A misleading title for a fine and fair-minded study focusing on French politics during the war that ended in 1954. The author's principal concern is with Bidault's party, the MRP, and with other French parties, though the succinct judgments of Vietnamese conditions and of American policies, especially those of John Foster Dulles, make this an altogether valuable account.
