Special Envoy to Churchill and Stalin, 1941-1946

By W. Averell Harriman and Elie Abel
Random House, 1975
595 pp. $15.00

An important memoir, modeled on Stimson and Bundy's On Active Service in Peace and War (1948). Mr. Abel and an assistant prepared the basic narrative, drawing on Mr. Harriman's private papers. Mr. Harriman reviewed the text and added comment and recollections from the perspective of 1975. The book adds details to our understanding of the diplomacy of World War II, although Mr. Harriman's role and conclusions have long been well known.
