This scholarly study finds that (1) the growth of the Chinese petroleum industry has been "phenomenal"; (2) total reserves are over 30 billion tons; (3) offshore drilling, transport, and refining equipment are in short supply and will probably be imported from the U.S.; (4) Chinese crude oil available for export (mostly to Japan) may be about 125 million tons per year by 1985.
