This admirably thorough little study treats the Japanese economy with scope and clarity. The author finds its overall pattern paradoxically similar to the East European model: increasing investment, lowering consumption, and achieving relative equality in income distribution. In fact, if growth rates and personal income equality are to be the measures, Japan has beaten the socialist countries at their own game.
