Power and Privilege: Influence and Decision-Making in Pakistan
Power and Privilege: Influence and Decision-Making in Pakistan
By Robert Laporte, Jr.
University of California Press, 1976, 225 pp.

"Who are the Pakistani elite ?" LaPorte asks, and attempts to answer the question by interviewing 80 U.S. nationals who have served in Pakistan. Their answers: groups in order of importance-the military, the politicians, the bureaucracy; personal qualifications in order of importance-family, wealth, education. The author argues that a new middle class is arising, but the evidence is less than solid.
