Best known for his stimulating and sometimes radical essays on international business, the late Stephen Hymer wrote a doctoral dissertation at MIT in 1960 which was highly influential in exploding the idea that direct investment can largely be explained by capital movements. After a long "underground" existence it is now published, with an attractive introduction by Hymer's teacher Charles Kindleberger, who did his part in spreading its influence.
