The Death of British Democracy
By Stephen Haseler
Prometheus Books, 1976, 262 pp

Ethnicity, de-industrialization, governmental inefficiency and abuse of power have raised questions about the viability of democracy in the remaining quarter of this century. Haseler's mildly polemical argument is that only a new, popular social democracy can save representative government in Britain from revolutionary Marxism. The essays in Hallowell's edited book provide insights into the problems of democracy in a variety of states. Neither book offers convincing sociological explanations for democracy's tribulations or blueprints for its survival.
