Civil-Military Relations
Civil-Military Relations
By Andrew J. Goodpaster and Samuel P. Huntington
American Enterprise Institute, 1977, 84 pp

Admirers of Samuel P. Huntington's classic The Soldier and the State (1957) will find here a brief but cogent update which takes into account the transformations in civil-military relations brought about by Vietnam, détente and changes in attitudes toward the use of military force. Huntington foresees in the future less interaction between the military establishment and social institutions - a professional corps which is different from, but not distant from, the society it serves. Goodpaster's wise and sound contribution on educational aspects of civil-military relations is of special interest because of his recently announced return from retirement to be Superintendent of troubled West Point.
