Two books rich in detail on what has happened in Jerusalem since 1967 but written from quite different points of view. Goichon, pointing to the illegality of Israeli action, condemns and deplores the transformation of Jerusalem from a universal to a purely Jewish city. Benvenisti, who as Deputy Mayor has been personally involved, is a keen and sympathetic analyst of the relations between the two communities, which he believes can be no more than uneasy coexistence as long as there is no political settlement.
