We are given here a work of unusual breadth and insight, encompassing political and cultural history, myth, socio-biology, dependency relationships, ideology, Mammon, the human spirit, and a score of other fascinations, brought together in the grand manner. The author's views on the difficulties that the U.S. may encounter in the post-modern era, in comparison with the possibly greater ease of Andean adjustment, will leave many readers unpersuaded; but this is unlikely to lessen the pleasure of immersion in so unusual and stimulating a book.
