A Rumor of War
A Rumor of War
By Philip Caputo
Holt, Rinehart and Winston, 1977, 346 pp

The author, now a foreign correspondent, fought in Vietnam as a Marine platoon leader in 1965-66. No one has recounted so well the combination of fear, pain, irrational euphoria, ferocity and boredom which filled the lives of combat soldiers. Any list of essential books on the American experience in Vietnam should include this memoir.
