Persona Non Grata: An Envoy in Castro’s Cuba

A Chilean intellectual, a socialist who served Allende as Ambassador to Cuba, describes his experiences in that country in 1970-71 and records his disenchantment with the pervasive repression. Noting the silencing of the poet Herberto Padilla, he concludes: "The conflict ended with the establishment on the island of a system of bureaucratic thought-control."
