Nigerian Capitalism

By Sayre P. Schatz
University of California Press, 1978
306 pp. $19.50

In his definitive study of the Nigerian economy Schatz reaches into and beyond his formidable knowledge of that country's economic structure and evolution in a stunning analysis of entrepreneurship and the political and material environment for business that has broad applicability to other parts of Africa as well. Milburn's study, on the other hand, is devoid of careful methodology and its main contention - that foreign businesses acted as "economic innovators" - is scantily documented.
