Africa and the United States: Vital Interests

Edited by Jennifer Seymour Whitaker
New York University Press (for the Council on Foreign Relations), 1978
244 pp. $15.00

This is a very useful delineation of U.S. interests throughout Africa, considered in their economic, political, and broad military frameworks. It not only takes Soviet interests and actions into account, but it is also sensitive to African states' own interests, problems and capabilities, although more is needed to have these elements fit the policy analyses. Several chapters will stand on their own as truly important contributions.
