Journey to Berlin

By James M. Gavin
Viking, 1978
336 pp. $14.95

This exciting and highly readable book, which covers the drops of the 82nd Airborne Division from Sicily to Belgium during World War II, is of interest as much for the story it tells as for the insight it provides into the character of a remarkable soldier who has had a distinguished career since leaving active service 20 years ago. Gavin is critical of Eisenhower's failure to press on to capture Berlin before the Russians got there.
