A well-known French writer reconstructs what he takes to have been the sorry decline from the hopes of Liberation to the internal divisions of the cold war. A partisan of an independent, perhaps Gaullist, France, his evocation of the spirit of French politics and life from 1944 to 1952 is impressive; his bibliography - by its virtual omission of Anglo-American authors - suggests a perhaps symptomatic insularity.
