Ethiopia: Empire in Revolution

By Marina and David Ottaway
Africana, 1978
250 pp. $22.50

This detailed account of Ethiopia's military-engineered political and social transformation covers only the period through 1977, before the successful Soviet-Cuban-supported drive to retake the Ogaden. With an authority stemming from apparently exhaustive researches during their 1974-1977 stay in Ethiopia, however, the Ottaways provide a convincing picture of a regime-and revolution-of growing strength and increasingly sure direction.
