Survival: Taped Interviews With South Africa's Power Elite

By Anna Starcke

Tafelberg, 1978, 217 pp.

Most of the book consists of extended interviews with 13 prominent South Africans conducted in conjunction with Ms. Starcke's prize-winning reportage on South Africa's future options. While one regrets the absence of an Andries Treurnicht on the white Right and of any Africans younger than Chief Buthelezi, the interviews are quite revealing of both the individuals and the nation's dilemmas. The P. W. Botha and Ntatho Motlana interviews are contrasting gems.
