China Scapegoat: The Diplomatic Ordeal of John Carter Vincent

By Gary May

New Republic Books, 1979, 294 pp.

A scholarly and sympathetic biography of one of that band of American Foreign Service officers who, as victims of anti-communist hysteria, were purged from the government in the 1950s because in the 1940s they told the unpopular truth about China. This disgraceful story is well known. May, however, adds important details and gives us an excellent portrait of Vincent, a courageous man.
