A well-informed re-creation by a longtime Hong Kong-based "China-watcher" of the power struggles in China in the years immediately prior to Mao's death. Unfortunately, the book concentrates almost exclusively on the struggle for power without analyzing in sufficient depth the economic, social and foreign policy context in which that struggle took place.
