A synoptic view of Europe in our time-subdued, even pessimistic, quite unlike the rather sanguine view this journal put forth in a special issue some 15 years ago. Today's Europeans, seen as in transit to an unknown destination, are described as bewildered about fundamental issues and deeply uncertain about the future. Thoughtful and thought-provoking-though one wonders how much of this gloom is the result of disappointed expectations.
