The Secretary

By Jochen von Lang
Random House, 1979
430 pp. $15.95

In life as in death, Martin Bormann remained a mystery. He rose through the ranks to become Hitler's right-hand man, wielded enormous power, yet was virtually unknown outside Hitler's entourage, and disappeared without trace in May 1945. This biography establishes that Bormann did commit suicide trying to escape from Berlin; beyond that it tells us little that was not already known.
