The Clouded Lens: Persian Gulf Security and U.S. Policy

By James H. Noyes
Hoover Press, 1979
144 pp. $6.95

American policy in the Gulf region in the critical period following British withdrawal and the crisis of 1973-74, during which the author served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense. Much of the book is devoted to giving cogent answers to the critics of America's arms sales and its military presence in the region. The opacity of the lens, and also the author's conclusion that harder tests are still to come, have been confirmed by events in the area since his book went to press.
