A Turning Wheel: The Long Revolutions of Asia

By Robert Shaplen

Random House, 1979, 385 pp.

An up-to-the-minute account of 11 Asian countries by the New Yorker correspondent who has spent more than 30 years in the Far East and is one of America's shrewdest observers of that part of the world. Shaplen is superb at capturing the vivid detail that lights up the larger scene. The book is particularly strong on the dilemmas of development in Southeast Asia.
