Although the presentation and organization of this book are at times as confusing as the title, the wealth of material and the competence of the analysis make it a work of considerable merit. The centerpiece is the war of 1973, from which the author goes forward and backward to cover the perceptions and policies of Arabs, Israel, Russia and America, and the interaction among them.
