The most critical aspects of Asian security are authoritatively treated in this excellent symposium. The emphasis is on American defense planning in the context of the Sino-Soviet conflict, the Soviet military presence in Asia, changing Japanese security perspectives, and the outlook in Korea, Vietnam and Indonesia. These papers were first presented to a Rand conference in January 1979, attended by U.S. officials as well as Asians, and reflect the concerns of that time. A summary of the conference discussions is included and is quite valuable.
