What an "Islamic Republic" looks like in actuality may be made manifest by events now unfolding in Iran. But if we are to understand the political role of Shi'i Islam it is necessary to go back many years into the past. This monograph covering the half-century of the Pahlavi dynasty is admittedly a first cut at a complex subject, but welcome as a means of understanding what has happened, and what may happen, in Iran.
