A weighty treatise, largely for academic specialists, which explores its chosen subject from many angles, from the writings of Marx and Engels to the praxis of the Brezhnev era, and from West to East and back again. Intended to fill what the authors see as a big gap in Western research and in the West's approach to the problems of dealing with the U.S.S.R., it is not quite as novel as promised but is always closely reasoned and is larded here and there with original thought.
