The American Establishment

By Leonard and Mark Silk
Basic Books, 1980
320 pp. $13.95

A father/son pair of authors combines historical understanding, good reporting, and an absence of tendentiousness in a straightforward portrait of Establishment institutions-e.g., Harvard, the Ford Foundation, Brookings, the Council on Foreign Relations, The New York Times. Theirs is a "Scotch verdict" but more favorable than otherwise.
