Arab Nationalism

By Bassam Tibi
St. Martin's, 1981
286 pp. $20.00

A perceptive examination of Arab nationalism in theory and practice, placing it in the double context of influence from the West (in particular, German Romantic nationalism) and of Third World emancipation, and affirming the importance of the writings of Sati al-Husri. In concluding his study (first published in 1971 in German) the author states that the movement is profoundly affected by day-to-day political realities, but he has not enriched this new edition with references to the realities of the intervening decade.
