The Modernization of Turkey

By Walter F. Weiker
Holmes & Meier, 1981
303 pp. $37.50

A survey of the Turkish Republic's first half-century of progress. Especially useful for its extensive documentation of the facts of growth and change, it spares the reader excessive theorizing over what modernization means. Because the perspective is one of 50 years, contemporary problems do not have the spotlight, although one might have hoped for more background on Turkey's recent economic and political travail.
