The evaporation of British power in the past 30 years has blinded many historians to the importance of Britain's role at the onset of the cold war. This study, using newly opened sources, is a corrective. The author traces the evolution of American policy from mediating between Great Britain and the Soviet Union to adopting an essentially British policy of containment.
