Because there is no coherent pattern of interaction between nationalism and communism in the states of Eastern Europe, each of the authors of these ten essays, which proceed alphabetically from Albania to Yugoslavia, follows his own inclinations. All have something to say, but none has the depth or imagination evident in Richard Burks' pioneering work in this field.
