The Third Indochina Conflict

Edited by David W.P. Elliott
Westview Press, 1981
247 pp. $18.50

A collection of papers on the causes and consequences of the Third Indochina conflict. One of the most interesting chapters is that by Charles Benoit on the tensions within South Vietnam, both before and after the communist victory, between the indigenous Chinese and the Vietnamese. The Chinese ran a very prosperous "second economy" which made them the objects of envy on the part of the communist cadres. The chapter is based on interviews the author conducted with several of the Chinese refugees from Vietnam who wound up as "boat people."
