The Shaping of Peace, Vol. II: Canada and the Search For World Order, 1943-1957

By John W. Holmes

University of Toronto Press, 1982, 464 pp.

The theme of this excellent study is the effort of Canadian diplomatists to influence institutions, above all the United Nations, toward the establishment of world stability. Lester B. Pearson is the hero of the story, and Canada's peacemaking role in the Suez crisis of 1956 is the climax. The author, now a professor of international relations, was an officer in the Department of External Affairs during the years he describes.
