Israeli Democracy: The Middle of the Journey

By Daniel Shimshoni

Free Press, 1982, 543 pp.

A formidable exercise in description and analysis of the body politic of Israel over its first three decades (to the election of 1977). The treatment is topical-constitutional system, political integration, "the nation in arms," political economy, etc.-but in dealing with those topics the author manages to give the country's chronological history as well. A book marked both by fascinating detail and by quiet wisdom, worth careful attention for an understanding of Israel's past and of its future.
