The region around Trieste, in dispute between Italy and Yugoslavia, was an explosive focal point at the outset of the cold war. The author, a lawyer and colonel in the U.S. Army, directed the Anglo-American trusteeship in the area in 1945-1947. His memoir is graceful and polished, a blend of history and recollection which stresses human conditions rather than high politics.
