A comparative study of the Japanese and Italian economies seems a surprising idea, but the execution is very good. Moreover, the method produces interesting insights and original lines of inquiry. A few of the 11 papers by Japanese and Italian economists fall below the book's standards, but those by the editor looking at the economic performance of the two countries and by Fabrizio Onida on their places in the international division of labor are outstanding.
