The Soviet Viewpoint

By Georgi Arbatov and Willem Oltmans

Dodd, Mead, 1983, 219 pp.

Moscow's leading Americanologist states his views in the form of answers to questions posed by a Dutch journalist. Arbatov's reasonable tone and his familiarity with the American scene do not disguise the manifold distortions both of American and of Soviet policy, past and present. One wonders whether understanding this "viewpoint" (rather, this expression of the current Soviet line for foreign consumption), as ex-Senator Fulbright in his introduction urges us to do, will be of much help in advancing the cause of peaceful coexistence and cooperation.
