United States Foreign Policy at the Crossroads

Edited by George Schwab

Greenwood Press, 1982, 268 pp.

Papers collected from a conference held in 1980 and dedicated to the memory of Hans Morgenthau. There is an excellent essay by Arthur Schlesinger, Jr., evaluating Morgenthau's great influence as the premier academic exponent of the "realist" (as opposed to "moralistic-legalistic") approach to international affairs. For Morgenthau, realism meant acting in the national interest. A theme in this volume is that national interest must now take into account global threats to human survival.
