Attlee
Attlee
By Kenneth Harris
Norton, 1983, 630 pp.

A British journalist, originally encouraged and aided by Attlee, has written a good popular biography of Labour's first successful Prime Minister. Harris depicts him as a shrewd, compromising politician, who capitalized on his own weaknesses, but grew in office. Harris sees Indian independence as Attlee's greatest triumph and the failure to solve the Palestine muddle as his greatest failure.
