Facing the Threat of Nuclear Weapons

By Sidney D. Drell

University of Washington Press, 1983, 130 pp.
The Nuclear Future

The Nuclear Future

By Michael Mandelbaum

Cornell University Press, 1983, 131 pp.

These two short books do not provide anything very new, but they offer clearly written and thoughtful comments about the key nuclear issues of the day. Drell is a prominent scientist; it was to shorter statements of his views that Andrei Sakharov was responding in his article in the Summer 1983 issue of Foreign Affairs, included in an appendix to the present book. Mandelbaum takes a moderate approach, believing that the nuclear future in the short-to-medium term will be much like the past, with little chance of either nuclear war or nuclear disarmament.
