Revolution in Nigeria: Another View
Revolution in Nigeria: Another View
By Major General Joseph Nanven Garba
Africa Books Limited, 1982, 145 pp.

The former foreign minister of Nigeria and close associate of General Gowon, who was head of state during the Nigerian civil war and its aftermath, writes here with the express intent of refuting a spate of recent books by former Biafran officials. Clearly Garba has an axe to grind-not against the Ibos or Biafrans, but against those of their former leaders who apparently seek to refight the ethnic conflicts which led to the secession and war. While only partly successful in his attempt to refute allegations about northern Nigerian sectionalism, he paints a convincing picture of Gowon's anguished efforts to assuage Ibo wounds and to achieve a compromise which would prevent civil war.
