Sadat and Begin: The Domestic Politics of Peacemaking

The declared theme is how Sadat and Begin were helped or hampered in negotiating peace by the requirements of maintaining their political power at home, a factor often overlooked or underestimated. That part of the story sometimes gets lost as the author follows the entire course of negotiation from January 1977 to March 1979, with full coverage of America's role as well. In making his case, Friedlander has a surer hand with Israel than with Egypt, but, all in all, he has given us a balanced book based on careful research.
