The Two Yemens
The Two Yemens
By Robin Bidwell
Westview Press, 1983, 350 pp

The most informative and useful book on Yemen to have appeared in English. After some brief historical background, it follows the course of both Yemeni states from year to year since the 1950s. Bidwell writes for the general reader, avoiding extravagant detail on names and places, but there is detail aplenty on the shifts in alignment, coups and political assassinations that have marked the recent history of both states. For the most part he plays the disinterested observer, except when he deals with U.S. policy and diplomacy; there his dyspepsia is undisguised.
