Envoy to the Middle World: Adventures in Diplomacy

The author served in the State Department for 20 years, and during the period covered by this memoir (1949-1951) was the first Assistant Secretary of State assigned responsibility for the Near East, Africa and South Asia-"the middle world." The most interesting chapters deal with the crisis involving Iran's nationalization of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company. Ambassador McGhee's use of recently declassified British diplomatic documents adds another dimension to the story.
