Peddlers of Crisis: The Committee on the Present Danger and the Politics of Containment
By Jerry W. Sanders
South End Press, 1983, 371 pp.

An ambitious study of the rise of "containment militarism" in the era of NSC-68 (1950) and its resurgence in the contemporary Committee on the Present Danger. About half the book deals with the Committee's successful attack on the alleged inadequacies of the Carter Administration, especially the SALT II agreements. Although the author is no sympathizer with the aims of the CPD, he presents a fair and well-documented account of a very articulate and effective elite pressure group.
